Sassy Water

Somehow I missed all the buzz surrounding the latest diet trend, The Flat Belly Diet. But I am happy to report that my mother-in-law emailed me the recipe for Sassy Water which we proceeded to make and drink this weekend. Dieting aside, I've gotta say the recipe is a very nice alternative to regular water and is definetly worth trying!(we left out the spearmint leaves and only let the mix sit for 2 hours before drinking)
Sassy Water
2 liters water (about 8 1/2 cups)
1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
1 medium cucumber. peeled and thinly sliced
1 medium lemon thinly sliced
12 small spearmint leaves

Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher and let flavors blend overnight.

I'm a bit disappointed with the Sassy water. The taste was just fine but I tried it for the "cleansing" effect. Unfortunately, it didn't work.

They seem to be selling copies now

The drink is not meant to cleanse. It gets rid of excess water(maybe 5 pounds). You should lose a few inches. After 4 days of this you're supposed to go on the actual diet. Go to prevention.com and get the scoop. They tell you just enough so you really need to buy the book. You can buy it now through them for 32 bucks OR you can buy it in November.

Amazon has the book listed for preorder (available in November) for about $17 US. You can buy it from Prevention Magazine for about $31 US now. If I'm still interested in November, I'll save half the price! Google "flat belly diet" and read some of the medical opinions. Not sure it's "all that".

I couldn't find spearmint leaves. Will regular mint leaves work?

do i need to squeeze the lemon?

Anonymous said...

How much of the sassy water do you drink daily? I made it adding some sugar-free pink lemonade mix. It tastes great and I'm peeing a lot, which I needed to do to get rid of excess swelling. But for how long do I drink the sassy water and how much do I drink per day???

Anonymous said...

When I made the sassy water, I cut up the whole lemon and used 1 Tablespoon of dried mint leaves as my supermarket was out of fresh spearmint leaves. I also added some sugar-free pink lemonade mix and it tasted very good. Just don't know how much of this to drink per day, if someone can help with that.

you're supposed to drink the entire 2 liters (8 1/2 cups) in one day. So I assume, you do this for the first 4 days....Thats a lot of water. I'm going to start today

Does anyone actually have the book? I just ordered it but it says it will take up to two weeks to deliver. I'd like to hear what some of the recipes are.

I just got the book and made up the sassy water tonight. Will try it out tomorrow.

If you read all of the info out about the diet, you are supposed to stay away from sweeteners, so any of you that added the lemonade mix to the sassy water are defeating the purpose. The diet wants you to continue to drink the sassy water as part of your daily routine. The jump-start program expects you to drink all 8 1/2 cups of it for all 4 days. After that I don't think you have to consume as much, but to continue your weight loss, it helps to drink either that much or a lot of water instead.

You are supposed to be drinking 8 glasses of water a day no matter what kind of diet you are on. So, if you drink the mixture over the four days, you should be drinking plain water to meet your daily goal of 8 8oz glasses.

And follow the directions on the recipe. It's self explanatory.

No salt. No soda. No chewing gum. No straws. They all cause bloating. (Denise Austin preached this before the Flat Belly diet.)

Do you discard the sassy water mixture and start over again each day...or can you re-use the lemon/cucumber/mint/ginger ?

I think its very funny that you guys are adding pink lemonaide to your Sassy Water.... why even pretend??

I dislike lemon in my water, but tried the sassy water just as an alternative. Turns out, it is fabulous!

A friend is doing the flat belly diet and loves, it but I enjoyed this recipe just to mix up my routine. Very tasty!

I had the same question though about reusing the cucumber, lemon, ginger and mint. The taste isn't nearly as strong on day 2, but the lemon and cucumber were quite strong. Understandably, the ginger itself was nearly gone. I think I may have to re-add more ginger the next time I re-use the others.

I may sound like an idiot when it comes to this whole "sassy-water" thing, since i haven't really read or heard a whole lot about the diet but, are you supposed to just make the recipe and drink it all the next day (and repeat for 4 days)and fast with it, or are you supposed to eat with it? and will it work the same without the mint since i am allergic, and with ground ginger instead of fresh?

Hi Anonymous from Australia,
If you want to order the book now, you can order it directly from the publisher for $31.95 PLUS $16.95 for airmail postage. They say to allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. http://www.rodalestore.com/
OR
You can pre-order the book from amazon.com (US)$17.13 or amazon.co.uk for £8.44 plus shipping on each. I live in Sweden and have ordered from both amazon locations and their shipping isn't as expensive as rodalestore's.
Good luck!

I forgot to say that amazon.com won't sell the book until October 28, and the UK site doesn't say when, just that you can pre-order. The both guarantee lowest possible price available is you pre-order.

Hello Australians,

I just ordered the flat belly diet book from a readers digest ad... but you could try callng the company that distributed the book... Rodale. The number comes from my invoice... is 1800 077 550.

The only thing that I question in the book is the fact that all recipes are quoting weight in ounces, so I have to convert everything before I can go and shop!

I think some of you may be mislead. Sassy water is not the "diet" it's self. It is not meant to "cleanse", it is basically just to make the water interesting. However, there are some digestive benefits from ginger and mint. It's thought to reduce bloating and calm the stomach. Sassy water is not the diet. The diet is based on adding a "MUFA" (good fats) to every meal

Thanks a bunch for the recipe. Like you, I missed the boat or should it be bloat. I made the water for tomorrow. Have a great day. Nice blog.

hi everybody... i was just searching about the sassy water. i suggest not to waist your money buying the book. i bet you can what it saids on the book if you research, plus on my research i stumble into this "I have the book for this diet. Yes, I'm smacking myself on the forehead for wasting my money.

The Sassy Water is to encourage you to drink more water throughout your day. Some people don't like to drink plain water so, I guess, this jazzes things up a bit. The ingredients are supposed to help reduce bloating (hence the name, anti-bloat diet). The main focus of this diet are the MUFAs. It advocates at least three servings of MUFAs per day. The shake that is part of the 1200 cal. first week is atrocious even if you make it fresh. I couldn't and had to make it the night before and then remix it in a shaker. I think it has something to do with the flaxseed oil (which tastes terrible and gives you gas) separating from the other ingredients. Gag me, literally. I love nuts so that part was refreshing.

Mostly this is just eating more fresh fruits and veggies and monounsaturated fatty acids in the appropriate portions. You don't need to spend the $$ on the book to do that."

Anonymous said...

Just a comment regarding the flavour of the shake. There is a reason why you shouldn't make the shake the night before and remix the following morning. Flax oil does taste horrible. Fact! But if you blend it with other things and leave it overnight, then the oil itself will become rancid. This is actually dangerous now to consume. So please do NOT do this!!

I am a naturopathic doctor and I know this for a fact!

Good luck!

Does anyone find the water salty?

This is first day and sassy water tastes great. Everything at store simply said 'mint' so I bought a pckage of mint leaves, real ginger root, cucumbers and lemons... all in produce section. As far as MUFA, I buy a big plastic jug of cold-processed flaxseed at Costco or Sams' Club.. and add it to something at every meal. But to get full benefit, it can't get cooked... heat kills the good stuff. There really isn't a flavor to it. Even my kids eat it and don't notice it. QUESTION - are we supposed to eat the cucumber when days supply of liquid gone? The ginger and much of the lemon is small and is drank. What about the mint leaves?

Thanks for the recipe. I am anxious to try it. You have a neat blog.

I have the book and you are supposed to drink a glass with each meal. Breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner.

I'm belatedly checking google about sassy water, so I found this site! For those that don't care for the taste of flax seed oil, I found it offensive for the 1st 3 days...now I am addicted to it and have flaxseed oil, raisins/nuts or raisin bran, 1/3 banana added to plain yogurt or cottage cheese every morning for breakfast. I love it!
I am going to the store right now for ginger...(and MUFA's).
Thanks for the recipe!

I will eat the cucumbers in the water. I don't see why they should be discarded. However, if there's a reason for not eating them I'd like to know please. Thanks!

Today is my first day drinking my Sassy Water and it didn't taste bad at all. It's a very warm day and I found it quite refreshing.

I hate water but when I drank the sassy water - following the recipe, I had no problem drinking it all in one day. I feel special as I make up a new recipe for the next day - like I am really doing something for myself that is important.
I plan to drink it for the 4 days and at least once a week after that. I don't know if I will follow the diet yet but I plan to add MUFAs to my meals.

I am curious...I have been taking flax seed capsules for over a year instead of fish oil because the fish oil began to leave a taste ... if I take the flaxseed capsule, do I need to add the flaxseed oil when it is called for - example the shake - could you just leave it out of the shake and take the capsule ???

Anonymous said...

I believe you drink it for at least 4 days. Here's the page for some recipesyou can navigate through: http://www.prevention.com/fbdjumpstart/

Thanks for the recipe. I just made it up and I think I will start it at lunch time.

I usually just drink lemon water but this has a nice twist to it.

I am going to Chapter's this weekend to find the book.

Also you are supposed to eat about 1200 to 1400 calories with the water in the first 4 days. Google Flat Belly Diet.
